Dr Alex Carabine
The over-dressed academic who is passionate about books and literature.

My Academic Work
I specialise in Gothic, medieval and Victorian literature (poetry, novels, plays – you name it!). My PhD thesis is ‘Gothic Medievalism: How Medieval Culture Haunts Gothic Literature (1764-1900)’. I taught at the University of Liverpool on BA and MA courses for four years, and I hold an Associate Fellowship in teaching.
My Writing
I have published on witches and vampires in academic journals and edited collections. My flash and short fiction pieces have been published in the Gramarye and Gothic Nature journals (read here). I’ve written two Gothic novels, am working on my third, and I’m actively approaching agents.
My Other Interests
I love vintage clothes, playing the Celtic harp and practicing yoga. Recently, I took up medieval sword fighting, which I enjoy more than I probably should. I also love to travel, and I make a point to visit museums and art galleries, libraries and cemeteries wherever I go.
My Values
I am a working class woman and was the first person in my family to achieve a degree. Because of this, I am dedicated to equality, diversity and inclusion, and it is my intention to make Literature Unlocked accessible and safe for all. To hear about my journey, read this blog post.
