About Literature Unlocked

Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” – Virginia Woolf

Literature Unlocked is for you. It’s for anyone who loves books but never went to university; or for those who went to university and miss the experience. It’s for anyone who has read a book and wished desperately for a friend to talk to about the deep thoughts it has inspired.

Because the libraries of universities are locked – or may as well be. There are barriers in the form of limited alumni and guest access, but also barriers to accessibility in the form of classicism, ableism and the unconscious biases embedded in the system. All of which make it incredibly difficult for diverse people to access universities.

Literature Unlocked was born of a love of reading and a deeply held belief that academic research, skills and friendship should be available to all.

Through workshops and seminars, book clubs and lectures, Dr Alex Carabine is finding ways to open the libraries. She aims to make academia enjoyable and accessible for anyone who has ever loved a book and needed to explore their ideas with other like-minded readers.

So whether you have a degree or have always wondered if you missed out, Literature Unlocked is for you.
